Big Mac or Big Fat?

Thesis -
While this advertisement claims that only real men can handle the masculine Big Mac burger, it pulls a trigger on the competitive side of men by questioning whether or not they are “mac” enough, which I find to be a tricky tactic into getting men to follow up on this unhealthy challenge, since one Big Mac burger is filled with a person’s total calorie intake for a day and is not worth the cost, for buying this burger means supporting poor labor conditions.

Body Paragraph -
Alhough the advertisement fails to give any nutrition content for the Big Mac, it doesn’t change the fact that the carb-filled burger is processed and unhealthy, something consumers override with their desire for the tasty looking garbage. Daniel Rossides, author of American Society: An Introduction to Macrosociology, believes that the meat at McDonald’s is bad and claims that the “amount of fat consumed is far in excess of health standards and it is the worst kind of fat, meat fat” (p. 538). On top of that, this meat fat is being fried in oil made out of meat fat. As for their French fries, they are not authentic. Chemists have created the scent of fries as well as a formula to keep them frozen in order to create this false replication. Also, since they are processed potatoes, they are more fattening and unhealthy. The main source of their taste comes from the cooking oil in which it is fried in and is believed to have “more saturated beef fat per ounce than a McDonald’s hamburger” (p. 120), according to Eric Schlosser, whom is the author of Fast Food Nation. So even though a burger with cheese, French fries, and a chemical milk shake is a culinary disaster for the human body, people are still willing to look past what these items are made out of and continue to believe what seems to be a simple deliciously cheap meal. Although they may have a decent taste, they come with health-risking consequences that still leave many coming back for more orders.

  1. I really liked your picture! On a more serious note, I do agree that women should also be portrayed in this ad. I do not believe that having a sexist ad will cause one sex to eat it more than the other. If anything it would turn off all consumers.

  2. I thought that the ad it self was very catchy and so was the title. I agree that it is not only a man sandwich, it was very sexist. All though that men would favor this more, I believe that women should still be okay to eat it.

  3. I really liked the fact that you mentioned the fact about the French fries and how its flavor is due to the cooking oil they are cooked in. Also I thought your picture was very funny because of the "Big Fat". I agree with you that everything we eat that isn't healthy for us, comes along with a health-risk.

  4. Wow you have some interesting facts in here. I didn't know that chemist made a scent to smell like french fries at McDonalds. This is sad man all the fast food I use to eat when I was younger was destroying my body. I like the annotation you used in the paragraph also. I agree with everything this post is saying.
