Sonic has an ad that advertises healthier choices on the menu. It states that it will help you keep your figure and displays women eating it. It says, “Choose a sensible lunch option that respects your favorite pair of jeans.” It’s also saying that you won’t gain too much weight from eating it. The women in the ad holding the chicken wrap is smiling and it shows that the food makes her happy. Although the ad for Sonic’s healthier menu may seem like a good “choice”, it has many obscurities that I can prove is wrong and that eating their food doesn’t “respect their favorite pair of jeans”. I will show the flaws in their fine print, how the target market of women is exploited by various marketing techniques, and how the healthier choices come with an unhealthy side and drink.
Body Paragraph:
The flaws in the fine print of the ad states that “Food menu is subject to change. Only at participating Sonic Drive-Ins.” This means that even though they advertise it, it might not be at your local sonic. I think that’s a rip off right there. They put this ad in a national magazine or billboard when people see it the might want to see what the food is really like. To their surprise though, the food that was advertised might not even be on the menu. I believe that the reason that they have fine print is to say things that can’t be boldly stated in the rest of the ad. Sometimes the fine print of an ad might go against what the main message of ad was trying to portray or to use fine print as a safety net so the business can walk out free. Schlosser states “This recent outbreak sheds light on a nationwide problem: inconsistent information…..”They then put the guilt on the consumer that they should’ve read the fine print in order to avoid confusion. I know companies despise having to put fine print on advertisements that they make because it reveals things that don’t go in the company’s favor, like certain terms and conditions and also the clear meaning to something they used to try to deceive the consumer with. Many times fine print comes with a warning also that may deter consumers from using or buying their product.
I agree I hate when that happens, when they lure us to the other side. The sad part is that I never read the fine print, I should learn to do that because then I can learn a lot about the ad itself. I agree with you post, they give us the guilt trip of not reading the fine print.
ReplyDeleteGreat pick ! Excellent attention to details. I actually can speak from experience, it happened to me several times when you get to the store to purchase your favorite item with significant discount and then you find out that it is not available anymore or "certain restrictions apply".
ReplyDeleteDoes not feel good to be fooled by marketing techniques.
